The Finding of the True Cross: A Rare Russian Icon (Circa 1820)
A rare large antique Russian Orthodox Icon dating from circa 1820. This highly significant piece, originating from Central Russia, depicts the pivotal moment in Christian history: the Finding of the True Cross.
The icon is a masterwork of the Revival style, painted originally with egg tempera on a wooden panel. The composition centers on the True Cross, supported by Saint Macarius I, the Bishop of Jerusalem, and is flanked by the towering historical figures of Saint Helena and her son, Emperor Saint Constantine I.
This artwork commemorates the 325 CE mission when Emperor Constantine granted his mother, Helena, access to the Imperial treasury to fund the search for the relics of Christ's Passion. This icon is a beautiful and skillful visual record of one of the most venerated miracles in the Church.
